Measurement conversion formulas and examples

The all-in-one converter handles metric, imperial, U.S. customary, decimal data, binary data, and temperature conversions from one page.

How unit conversion works

Most categories convert by moving through a shared base unit. For example, length values can convert to meters internally and then back out to miles, feet, centimeters, or another selected unit.

Temperature is different

Temperature conversion needs offset formulas. Celsius to Fahrenheit uses F = C x 9 / 5 + 32, while Fahrenheit to Celsius uses C = (F - 32) x 5 / 9.

Common conversion examples

  • 1 mile is 1.609344 kilometers.
  • 1 kilogram is about 2.20462 pounds.
  • 1 U.S. gallon is 3.78541 liters.
  • 1 inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters.

Precision and rounding

Converted results are rounded for readability. For engineering, lab, legal, or production measurements, use the exact precision required by the workflow and verify the source unit before converting.

Unit converter assumptions

Linear units convert through a shared base unit for each category. Temperature uses the proper Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin formulas instead of a simple multiplier.

Volume includes common U.S. liquid units and imperial gallons. Data storage includes decimal units such as KB and GB plus binary units such as KiB and GiB. The year unit uses 365 days for simple time conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Which unit categories are included?

The converter supports length, area, volume, weight, temperature, speed, pressure, energy, power, time, and data units.

Does temperature conversion use the correct formulas?

Yes. Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin conversions use offset formulas rather than a simple multiplier.

What is the difference between decimal and binary data units?

Decimal data units use powers of 1000, such as KB and GB. Binary data units use powers of 1024, such as KiB and GiB.

Are U.S. liquid units and imperial units the same?

Not always. U.S. gallons and imperial gallons are different units, so volume conversions should use the exact unit that matches the source measurement.
